A del.icio.us bookmarklet

I like Alan Marklet’s Maker, a tool that let you create bookmarklets to add links to del.icio.us (and other services). But I wanted more functionality, so I hacked his code and created my own version.

Extending the del.icio.us bookmarklet

Since I got so many bookmarks (6k and rising!) I really need the description text in there to remind me what I bookmarked. Ideally that would be either some text I highlighted in the page, or else the description meta-tag.

Installing the del.icio.us bookmarklet

Installation couldn’t be easier. Drag the following link to your toolbar:
+del.icio.us

That’s it!

If you drag the link and nothing happens, it may be that your “link toolbar” is hidden (the name may change in different browsers). Normally if you right click near the the “address bar” (i.e., the place where it says http://gotofritz.net … ) you should get a menu which lets you tick the toolbars you need on and off.

Using the del.icio.us bookmarklet

When you run into a page you want to bookmark, you can either highlight some text on the page and then click on the bookmarklet, or just click on the bookmarklet straight away and take the chance on the page’s meta description.
You will be asked to log into del.icio.us if you are not alread logged in.
